Vitamins for Diabetes

Posted under Fish Oil Supplements

Vitamins For Diabetes

Vitamins are essential to sustain life and we need to take the required amounts from our daily foods or dietary supplements. The benefits they provide help people feel more energetic, and assist the body in its regular functions.

As a diabetic patient is not able to get all the required nutrition from diet because of impaired functioning of the system, some vitamins may be required to take along with the regular medication. But, before taking any vitamin supplements, it is important to check with a doctor for what affect it may have upon diabetes.

Some of the essential vitamins for diabetics are -

Vitamin E

People with diabetes need extra vitamin E, which improves insulin activity and acts as an antioxidant (helps reduce the risk of diabetic complications), fights toxins and oxygenates the blood. Research has shown that people with low blood levels of vitamin E are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. In type 2 diabetics, it improves glucose tolerance.

It may require at least 2-3 months or more of regular intake of Vitamin E supplementation for benefits to become apparent. If one is taking an anticoagulant like ecospirin, aspirin (blood thinner), consult a physician before taking supplemental vitamin E.

Dietary sources include fortified & multi-grain cereals, nuts, wheat germ, vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables.

Vitamin C

Type 1 diabetic patients generally have low vitamin C levels. By increasing the amount of vitamin c in the bloodstream, the amount of sorbitol may get reduced. Sorbitol is a destructive sugar that can accumulate and lead to increased risk of diabetic complications such as retinopathy (eye), neuropathy (nerves) and renal damage. Vitamin C also helps improve glucose tolerance in the case of type 2 diabetic people. Doctors recommend between 1 – 3 g of Vitamin C dosage per day for diabetics.

Dietary sources include fresh vegetables and citrus fruits, such as broccoli, green and red pepper, cauliflower, lemon, cabbage, pineapples, strawberries, oranges, olives, citrus fruits.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is also known as pyridoxine. Diabetics who have a deficiency of this vitamin mostly suffer from neuropathy (nerve damage), and benefit from its supplementation. Peripheral neuropathy is a common outcome of vitamin B6 deficiency. Pyridoxine supplements are able to improve glucose tolerance, particularly for women with gestational diabetes, or impaired glucose tolerance caused by intake of birth control pill.

Vitamin B6 is also important in preventing other diabetic complications as it is an important non-protein compound that combines with the protein – collagen to form an active enzyme.

Dietary sources include chicken, fish, liver, whole grains, nuts, and legumes.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 supplementation does to quite an extent help treat diabetic neuropathy. The presence of Vitamin B 12 is necessary for the correct functioning of nerve cells, and therefore taking it as a supplement may help reduce nerve damage.

Vitamin B12 may be taken orally in capsule form or intravenously or by injection to reduce nerve damage caused by diabetes in most people.

Recommended dosage is up to 500 mcg of Vitamin B12 three times a day.

Dietary sources include liver, yogurt, dairy products, fish, non fat milk.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is both a hormone and a vitamin. Vitamin D deficiency predisposes individuals to type 1 and type 2diabetes. Low levels of vitamin D interfere with the proper functioning of insulin-producing cells. If not enough insulin is present, blood glucose levels will begin to rise.

Those with higher blood levels of vitamin D have better sensitivity to insulin and lower blood glucose levels compared to those with low vitamin D levels.

The skin is the most plentiful source of vitamin D. When exposed to ultraviolet light, our skin can produce as much as 20,000 IU of vitamin D. Food sources are limited to egg yolks, liver, cod liver oil and fortified milk.

Biotin (Vitamin B8) -

Biotin is a B vitamin needed to process glucose. It works in harmonization with insulin in the body, and independently increases the activity of the enzyme glucokinase (responsible in the primary step of glucose utilization). Glucokinase is formed only in the liver, and its concentration may be extremely low in diabetic patients.

Supplements of biotin may have a significant effect on glucose metabolism for both type 1 and type 2 diabetics. It might to an extent help reduce pain from diabetic nerve damage.

Experts advise taking 16mg of biotin for a few weeks to see for any changes in blood sugar levels.

Dietary sources include cereal, grain products, yeast, liver, legumes.

Niacin (Vitamin B3)

High levels of niacin may actually weaken glucose tolerance, and should therefore be avoided by diabetics. However, smaller amounts (500-750 mg per day for one month followed by 250 mg per day) can help some type 2 diabetics to lower their glucose levels.

Dietary sources include liver, poultry, milk, leafy green vegetables.

ALA and GLA

ALA (alpha-lipoic acid) is a potent and natural antioxidant, and may function to help diabetic neuropathy and reduce pain from free-radical break up. Some studies link ALA to decreased insulin resistance and thus, the control of blood sugar.

GLA (gamma-lipoic acid) is another naturally occurring antioxidant. It is helpful for improving damaged nerve function, which is common in diabetes.

What Every Athlete Should Know About Doms and Recovering From Muscle Soreness

Posted under Fish Oil Supplements

WHAT IS DOMS?

If you are athletic and tend to read articles about health and fitness, you may have stumbled upon a headline or two that mentions an ailment called ‘DOMS’ and thought ‘is that some sort of disease of the month?’ DOMS or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness is not a disease but rather a popular new buzz word that simply describes discomfort or pain in muscles associated with increased physical exertion. Often confused with acute muscle soreness, DOMS does not result right after exercising; often 1 to 3 days can go by before it the soreness comes on. Typical symptoms include muscle stiffness, strength loss and swelling that usually subside within 7 days without any special treatment.

Although it can be annoying and uncomfortable, DOMS is pretty common and is a normal bodily response to greater intensity, increased duration and unusual physical activities. It is part of the body’s adaptation process, which leads to increased stamina and strength as the muscles recuperate and build.

WHO GETS IT AND HOW?

DOMS is not partial to any age, sex or physical training. Anybody can get it regardless of muscular maturity or conditioning. It strikes anyone especially at the beginning of a new workout program, increased exercise intensity or change in sports activity.

It is believed that DOMS is a result of the microscopic tearing of muscles and subsequently setting off an inflammatory response. It is predominantly caused by exercise such as downhill running, going down the stairs, plyometrics and resistance training, although any movement the body is not used to can also lead to it. The degree of tearing and inflammation depends on how long, how hard and what type of exercise you do.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

Prevention and treatment of DOMS is important to coaches, trainers and therapists because the pain and discomfort associated with DOMS can hamper performance and impair physical training. DOMS is bothersome and very common but it does not necessarily have to be part of anyone’s exercise program.

In the past, stretching before and after exercising was one of the recommended ways to avoid DOMS or any exercise related muscle soreness. However, a study published in 2007 by a research team in Australian showed that stretching was not effective in avoiding muscle soreness.

With inflammation as one of the main symptoms of DOMS, most athletes use NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen to temporarily control the soreness.  NSAIDs lessen the muscle pain but do not actually speed up the healing process and overuse of these drugs can also cause serious adverse effects like hypertension and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Here are some things you can do to prevent or minimize DOMS:

· Raise your heart beat level with a warm-up well before any activity and completely cool down afterwards.

· When starting a new exercise or activity, do it gradually and build up the intensity and duration not more than 10% per week.

· Avoid making a sharp increase in the duration of your activity.

· Avoid making sudden alterations in the type of activity or exercise you’re doing.

· Take natural food supplements that promote general good health and have anti-inflammatory properties like fish oil.

Fish Oil! REALLY?!

It turns out that oil from cold water oily fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies and sardines is rich in something called omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids have proven protective healing effects for arthritis, dermatitis, cardiovascular conditions, and other inflammatory diseases, and they also regulate cholesterol in the body as well.

The fish themselves do not really produce the omega-3 fatty acids but accumulate them from either eating microalgae rich in these fatty acids or by eating other fish that have eaten these microalgae.

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are recognized for their strong anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3 fatty acids act on the muscle fibers, where the pain comes from. These acids stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory hormones, regulate and prevent formation of pro-inflammatory agents, increase elasticity of muscles to reduce the risk and degree of muscular injury during workouts, and influence the cartilage cells to enhance cellular repair capabilities.

After long term use of omega-3 fatty acids, no significant adverse reactions have been noted compared to serious side-effects from long term use of NSAIDs and other analgesic drugs.  With their potent anti-inflammatory effects in combination with their cardiovascular and other health benefits, omega-3 fatty acids are the safe nutrient choice for the alleviation of the symptoms of DOMS.

Stressful Times Require Extra Nutrients and Healthy Lifestyle Additions

Posted under Fish Oil Supplements

During stressful times your body naturally produces more of the harmful hormone cortisol which promotes free radical damage to your cells and promotes inflammation that can weaken you, your adrenal glands and weaken your immune system. In addition, stress pressures and the lack of essential nutrients to help you deal with stress can also help lessen your resolve and your ability to be able to find the solutions that are available if you only weren’t so ‘Stressed Out’! Combine these unhealthy combos of too little sleep, not getting enough daily exercise to help relieve tension along with not eating a healthy diet and not getting the right nutritional supplements: like antioxidants, the B-complexes and adaptogens your body requires more of during times of stress and you are making it that much harder on your body and your mind to find positive solutions.

Taking some extra adaptogen herbs during times of stress can be very helpful. Adaptogens are special herbs that have been extensively studied and used for hundreds of years. They have an ability to help keep the body in balance. If the body is fatigued, an adaptogen will help restore energy without making the body jittery or nervous as caffeine often does. If the body is stressed, an adaptogen will help calm the body. In addition, an adaptogen herb is also known to soothe various organs of the body to help them function better or to help restore health to overstressed organs or glands. Adaptogens are particularly helpful in restoring balance, energy, and health to the adrenal glands, the liver, the mind, the kidneys, the heart, and to the central nervous system.

Examples of anti-stress helpful adaptogen herbs are ashwagandha, astragalus, ginkgo biloba, Fo-Ti (Ho Shou Wu), rhodiola rosea, licorice root, and schizandra. Also included are the various ginsengs (Panax ginseng), such as Chinese and Korean ginseng, and Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), also known as eleuthero root.

If I had to pick one adaptogen to add to your supplements during times of stress, in addition to taking a high quality multivitamin that has extra B-complexes and antioxidants, that adaptogen would be a quality ashwagandha extract. Ashwagandha extract is available at almost all health food stores and usually just two to four caps spaced throughout the day during times of stress can be most helpful. Be sure to read and follow the instructions on the bottle. Siberian ginseng would be another excellent adaptogen to add to your daily supplements during times of stress to help provide some extra energy without putting too much stress on your adrenal glands the way that too much caffeine and harmful soda and sugar added “Energy” drinks do.

Of course eating a healthy diet is your first step to help your body get the nutrients and vitamins it needs in time of stress. A quality 4 tablet a day (two in the morning and two in the evening) type multi-vitamin will usually contain enough of the important vitamins, including the B-complexes and calcium & extra magnesium to help calm the nerves and relax tension.

Remember, that most vitamins like antioxidants and Vitamin C and the B complex vitamins generally only stay in the body 5 hours to 12 hours, are generally excreted through urine and waste throughout the day, and in most cases must be replenished on a twice daily basis. During times of stress your body uses anti-stress type nutrients even more. This is one reason why people who are under stress or whose immune systems are vulnerable should especially take vitamin C and vitamin B complex or multivitamin or multi-green nutritional supplements two to three times daily to practice preventive nutrition and not be as likely to become ill or catch that cold or flu.

It must be emphasized the vitamins, minerals (calcium and especially the B-Complexes and magnesium) are used up rapidly during times of stress and immune system attack. This is also why it is wise to take your daily multivitamin, mineral, and/or multi-greens supplement at least twice a day, morning and evening, generally with meals or a light healthy snack. You may also take them in the morning and mid afternoon as many people begin to suffer the ‘blahs’ and fatigue early in the afternoon as their bodies become stress induced fatigued because of all the pressures and demands of the day. You don’t eat just once a day, so you should also take your nutritional supplements more than once a day. Often, taking your vitamins in the mid afternoon (instead of waiting till your evening meal) around two to three in the afternoon, with a light healthy snack, (an apple and some walnuts or almonds or a cup of non-fat plain yogurt) will help you avoid the unhealthy extra cup of coffee, soda, or fattening and sugary snacks that have been weakening your adrenal system. These unhealthy type energy rush snack also toxify your liver and kidneys, overly acidify your body and digestive intestinal tract, leaching calcium and magnesium from your bones and body and weaken your immune system.

To help avoid getting sick and even more overly tired when under stress, eat healthy, get enough rest, practice prayer and meditation, try to be positive and count the blessings you do have, keep your sense of humor and get regular moderate exercise to help relieve tension and benefit your cardiovascular system. Also, take a good high qualtiy multivitamin , take a daily quality Fish Oil capsule(s) and eat more healthy (not fried), fish, (wild Alaskan salmon, sardines, lake trout, mercury free tuna etc), and add an adaptogen like Ashwagandha and or Ginseng.

A good place to find many of the nutrients above that I talked about in a high quality comprehensive anti-stress multii-vitamin that also contains important, B-Complexes, adaptogens, antioxidants and important extra minerals like calcium and magnesium may be found at http://www.doctorgreens.com. Look for their Four a Day or Complete Multi-vitamin that are an All in One Type of a complete multi-vitamin that also contain important organic and wholesome vegetables and fruits. Even in stressful times things will get better, so be positive, ‘Hang in There’, and Pray and ask for help and guidance from above. Here’s to your best of health.

There are many alternative treatments for asthma. Asthma is known as the “most common chronic disease of childhood.” Normally, people will use herbal remedies to try and dilate the air passageway to help you breathe if you’re having problems with asthma.

Supplements can include Flavonoids, such as Genistein and Quercetin; Boswellia is an Ayurvedic herb; Vitamin C, magnesium, and gingko; Sylimarin, found in milk thistle; Alpha Lipoic Acid, found to be useful in one mouse study; Butterbur; and Yoga may help prevent or decrease asthma, and are considered natural asthma treatments.
